Cookstown
 
Cookstown has the widest (130ft) and the longest (1 ½miles) main street in Ireland. Cookstown was built about 1609 as a market and post town and obtains the name from its founder Allen Cook. The present town was built by William Stewart of Killymoon in 1750. The parkland of the spectacular castle, Killymoon, is now a golf course.

Close to the town is ‘Loughry College’ which is Northern Ireland’s ‘centre of excellence’ for food technology. The college has recently opened a new unique Food Business Incubation Centre to support local food industry, has training premises and runs an Outreach Centre for Queens University Belfast.



  Cookstown and District Women’s Group

  Cookstown and District Women’s Group was formed in January 1997. Their aims are to:

Provide a variety of courses to reflect the wide range of interests among the women of the area.
Promote awareness of isolation and social inclusion of women within the rural area.
Bring greater cross-community and economic advantage to all who take part.

  In 1997 a women’s centre in Cookstown opened and the group now employ a project
  manager and officer.
The group now operate under the name “Positive Steps”.



  Cookstown and Dungannon Women’s Aid

  The group is instrumental in providing support for women in the Cookstown and
  Dungannon who have suffered from domestic violence.



  Mid-Ulster Branch M.S. Society

  The Mid-Ulster Multiple Sclerosis Society covers the Cookstown, Magherafelt and
  Maghera District areas. This is a voluntary organisation providing support to people
  with multiple sclerosis and their families. The society is the main source of impartial
  and independent advice on issues affecting people with multiple sclerosis in the area.

 



  Northern Ireland Agricultural Producers Association

  Provide support to the agricultural community within the area.


  Ulster Farmers Union

  The Ulster Farmer’s Union is a lobby organisation representing the Northern Ireland
  farming community. The Union’s membership work together, assisted by professional
  staff, to prepare and present their case to Government and industry. The UFU also
  has a permanent presence in Brussels. Countryside Services Ltd, a subsidiary of the
  UFU, delivers services and savings to members. A technical officer service is available
  for members who require specific assistance.

 



  Cookstown Migrant Workers Interagency Forum

CWSAN in partnership with Cookstown Local Strategy Partnership have over this past two years attempted to engage both new incoming migrants to the area and those agencies who deal with the issues that they encounter.  After attending a minorities conference a forum was set up which brought together all the agencies in the area, from health to education and advice services to housing.  The group recently held it’s first health and employment rights open clinic and hopes to emulate the STEP model in Dungannon where a worker’s forum and individual groups have emerged as a result of these clinics.

 

  Cookstown Age Concern

  Cookstown Age Concern has been operational from 1985 and has since provided a
  quality service to Senior Citizens in the area.

  The group aims to address social exclusion through offering appropriate services and
  activities based on identified needs. Age Concern has recently started a
  Befriending Scheme, a network support group and a network of volunteers with an
  emphasis on providing opportunities for personal development and training.
