The
Sperrin Mountains are
bounded by the towns
of Omagh, Magherafelt, Cookstown and
Strabane.
The gentle contours of these mountains are
threaded
by small quiet country roads. The Sperrins
range is
over 40 miles from east to west. Locals
have panned
for gold in the Sperrins for years and
some relatively
large deposits have recently been found.
Beaghmore Stone Circles
are a mysterious
complex of seven Bronze Age stone circles
and
alignments located 10½ miles north-west of
Cookstown. This atmospheric place,
especially at dawn and dusk is visited by
over
4000 people every year.
St. Mary’s Youth Club and Community
Group, Dunamore
St Mary's Youth and Community Club was formed
in 1989 to enhance community spirit
in the locality. The group have organised a
range of social activities such as dancing
and music classes and a fortnightly dance in
the local hall. A Senior Citizens club takes
place each week.
Lissan Rural Development Association
Lissan Rural Development Association was
formed in January 2000. The group's efforts
are being concentrated on acquiring funding
for the purchase of a mobile type building
and a site to accommodate it. The group use a
recently refurbished post office. The
improvement of local sites and amenities is a
main priority. The group hopes to develop
a walkway around Lough Fea. They also aim to
increase the provision of recreational,
educational and occupational facilities to
meet the needs of the area.They
published a xxtourist/visitors
guide in 2003 and are working on a local
walkway.
Lissan Historical Association
Lissan Historical Association meet each month
to explore local history. Local speakers
are invited along to talk on an aspect of
history in the area. The group have just
published a Townland names publication part
one. This project involves taking each
townland in the area and recording past and
present historical events, and also a
photograph collection of residences and old
houses. Lissan Historical Association intends
to continue working on all the townlands in
their area and eventually to put the
information into CD-Rom form.
Broughderg Area Development
Association
The association was established in 1997 to
regenerate and develop the social,
agricultural, tourist and economical potential
of the Broughderg area. It also aims to
encourage necessary housing development and to
lobby for the improvement of
essential services to the area.
The group has a three phase strategy and
vision which caters for the local community,
the visiting tourist and local
employment/enterprise. Phase one is the
renovation of the
old church for community use.This
was opened in 2004 and is a credit to this
isolated farming xxcommunity.
Loughinsholin Tourism
Association
Loughinsholin Tourism Association is involved
in developing tourism in the
Loughinsholin area. The association is also
keen to develop mutually beneficial
partnerships between amenity, accommodation
and activity providers in the area as
well as fostering tourism links between the
Mid-Ulster area and the wider world.
