CWSAN PROJECTS
Investing For Health: ‘Community Involvement
Programme’
The Community Involvement Programme was
initiated in September 2005 and is presently
funded until August 2008. The project is
funded through the Northern Health & Social
Services Board and works under the Investing
for Health Strategy. The aim of the project
is to engage with local communities to help
them address local health and well being
needs and to link groups to various
statutory and voluntary organisations that
can support them to tackle the wider
determinants of health. The project focuses
on the designated wards of Ardboe & Pomeroy.
During the past year the project has helped
groups to address matters such as diet and
nutrition, physical activity, mental health
and energy efficiency. Currently the
Community Involvement Programme is involved
in conducting a Health Impact Assessment (HIA).
The HIA will assess the potential effects of
the project on the health of the target
population. It will consist of
questionnaires, stakeholder workshops and a
community profile.

Weak
Community Infrastructure Project
- “Power to the People Project”
The Programme is funded under the Peace 11
Extension, Measure 2.7 administered by CFNI.
The Programme commenced in March ’06 and
will run until end June ’08.
The Programme provides ongoing mentoring and
developmental support to ‘ten
areas/communities’ – Ardboe, Coagh,
Dunnamore, Killycolpy, Montober, Oaklands,
Pomeroy Sandholes, Stewartstown and
Tullyhogue.
The Programme assists 20 core groups in
building their capacity to deliver community
projects and initiatives within their
respective areas. Support given includes;
assisting groups to draw up community
audits, develop action plans, identify and
then deliver relevant training, draw out
possible funding lines, assist groups to
develop lobbying skills and assist them in
the completion of project proposals.
Upon completion, the Programme hopes to leave
behind groups and communities, which are
self-sustaining and which can take forward
and deliver initiatives themselves which
will have a positive impact upon their areas
and communities.

Migrant Worker Support Project and
Interpreting Programmes
CWSAN Migrant Worker Support Project was
launched in June 2005 and is currently
funded by Northern Health Board and
Cookstown Local Strategy Partnership. It has
three bilingual support workers and an
administrator. The main goal of the Project
is to provide migrant workers with practical
information about and assistance with
accessing local services such as GP
registrations, school enrolments, National
Insurance Number applications, Home Office
registrations, family related benefits,
employment rights etc. We have over 400
clients on our database and deal with an
average of one hundred appointments a
month. Even though the Project’s focus is
very much on the individual, we also strive
to encourage community development activity,
which has led to constituting a Polish
Association – Cookstown as well as monthly
meetings of the Lithuanian, Latvian and
Portuguese speaking communities. Moreover we
host quarterly Interagency meetings and
provide language support for other community
organisations such as playgroups, CAB or
Women’s Aid.
